Canadian citizenship in 2026: The seven pathways Nigerians should know

By

Canada has outlined seven official pathways through which Nigerians and other foreign nationals can become Canadian citizens in 2026. The list covers birth, descent, naturalisation, children, adoption, and special grants for stateless persons.

Canadian citizenship provides access to one of the world's strongest passports, full voting rights, unrestricted employment, and greater security for families planning long-term lives in Canada. Most applicants must first obtain permanent residence, but the rules also recognise several other routes depending on personal circumstances.

The seven pathways

1. Citizenship by birth: Anyone born on Canadian soil is generally recognised as a Canadian citizen from birth, regardless of the nationality or immigration status of their parents. There are only a few exceptions.

2. Citizenship through Canadian parents: People born outside Canada may qualify if at least one parent is Canadian and they satisfy the citizenship-by-descent rules. Canada updated these rules in December 2025, broadening eligibility for certain children born abroad to Canadian parents.

3. Citizenship through naturalisation: This remains the most common pathway for immigrants. Applicants must hold permanent resident status and have lived physically in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the five years before applying.

4. Citizenship for permanent resident children: Children under 18 who already hold permanent resident status can become citizens, depending on whether a parent is already Canadian or is applying for citizenship at the same time.

5. Citizenship through adoption: Individuals born outside Canada who are legally adopted by Canadian citizens may qualify through a direct citizenship grant. The adoption must comply with Canadian citizenship laws.

6. Citizenship after immigration through adoption: Adopted children can first immigrate to Canada as permanent residents, then apply for citizenship through the standard naturalisation process once residency requirements are met.

7. Citizenship for certain stateless individuals: Canada offers a special citizenship grant for some stateless individuals born abroad to Canadian parents. Applicants must meet strict age and physical-presence rules.

Naturalisation requirements

Immigrants going through naturalisation must also file taxes where applicable, show language proficiency within the required age group, pass the citizenship examination, and take the citizenship oath. Canadian authorities encourage applicants to review the requirements carefully, as eligibility varies by immigration history and pathway.

The report comes after Canada introduced a new immigration pathway for skilled foreign military personnel, including qualified Nigerians, through the Express Entry system. The Skilled Military Recruits category held its first selection round on July 23, 2026. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, only four Invitations to Apply were issued in the inaugural draw, the smallest Express Entry round ever conducted.

What it means for Nigerians

For Nigerians planning to settle in Canada, the clearer pathway list removes some guesswork. Permanent residence remains the main entry point for most applicants, so meeting residency and documentation rules early is critical for anyone aiming at citizenship in 2026.
