UK Graduate Visa: New rules cut post-study stay to 18 months from 2027 – Full list of requirements for Nigerian students

By

Nigerian students hoping to stay in the United Kingdom after graduation face tighter deadlines and a shorter stay-back period from January 2027. The UK government has confirmed that Graduate visa applicants from 1 January 2027 will only get 18 months to remain in the country, down from the current two years for bachelor's and master's degree holders.

Students must apply before their Student visa expires or they lose the opportunity to stay legally. The Graduate visa allows graduates to work or look for employment without employer sponsorship, but timing is everything.

Key changes to stay-back periods

Students who complete a bachelor's or master's degree and apply for a Graduate visa on or before 31 December 2026 will still receive permission to stay for two years. From 1 January 2027, new applications will only grant 18 months of post-study stay. Doctoral graduates are unaffected: PhD holders remain eligible for a three-year stay after obtaining the Graduate visa.

The revised timeline makes application timing critical. Graduating before the end of 2026 and submitting the visa application before the deadline could secure an extra six months compared with those applying from 2027 onward.

Eligibility requirements for Graduate visa

Nigerian students must meet the following conditions to qualify, according to the British Council Guide and UK immigration rules:

  • Hold a valid Student visa or the older Tier 4 (General) Student visa at the time of application.
  • Have completed an eligible course – a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD – at a recognised UK higher education institution with a proven record of compliance with immigration rules.
  • The university must formally notify UK immigration authorities that the student has completed the course before the Graduate visa application can be processed.
  • Submit the application online while physically inside the UK.

Applications made after the Student visa expires or from outside the country will not be accepted. All applicants must already be in the UK when they apply.

Application process and deadlines

Students are required to apply online while still in the UK. The UK government has reaffirmed that the Graduate visa does not require employer sponsorship, allowing graduates to work or look for work after their studies. With competition for international jobs growing, immigration experts advise eligible students to prepare documentation well before their Student visas expire to avoid missing the legal window.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the UK also revised financial requirements for Student and Child Student visa applicants, retaining strict proof-of-funds rules for most African countries. The updated guidance, published on Monday, 27 July 2026, grants limited exemptions to nationals of Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia, alongside countries including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, and several European nations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UAE and Qatar, according to Punch.

What this means for Nigerian students and the naira

The reduced stay-back period from 2027 will force Nigerian students and their families to reassess the cost-benefit of a UK degree. Shorter post-study work windows mean less time to earn in pounds and recover tuition fees, which could reduce demand for forex for UK tuition. For businesses, fewer Nigerian graduates staying longer in the UK may also mean lower remittance flows back home. The change adds urgency to early visa planning and could push more students to target graduation before 2026 to lock in the full two-year stay.
