WhatsApp Launches Five New Calling Features Including Web Calls and Call Transfer

By

WhatsApp has announced five new calling features that for the first time bring voice and video calls to web browsers. The Meta-owned platform also introduced a Call Transfer feature, Waiting Room for group calls, improved HD video quality, and noise suppression.

The update is rolling out gradually to users worldwide. Those who do not see the new tools immediately should update the app and check again over the coming days.

Voice and Video Calls Now Work on Web Browsers

Users can now start or receive voice and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without installing the desktop application. The feature supports one-on-one and group conversations. WhatsApp confirmed that all calls made through the web remain protected with end-to-end encryption. The web version also includes screen sharing, call reactions, call history, and favourite contacts. The update is especially useful for Linux users, who can now access calling features from their browsers for the first time.

Call Transfer Lets You Switch Devices Mid-Call

With the new Call Transfer feature, users can move active calls from a smartphone to a computer, tablet, or browser without hanging up. The feature is designed for people who move between devices during work, study, or daily activities and need a more flexible calling experience.

Waiting Room Gives Group Call Hosts More Control

Group calls created through call links now have a Waiting Room feature. When hosts activate the “Require approval to join” option, participants enter a waiting area before being admitted into the call. This gives hosts more control over who joins meetings and allows time for organisers to prepare before the session begins.

QuickHD and Noise Suppression Improve Call Quality

WhatsApp launched QuickHD to deliver high-definition video from the start of a call. Noise Suppression filters background sounds to make voices clearer, even in noisy environments. Users can switch Noise Suppression on or off directly from the calling interface.

WhatsApp said the five features are part of a push to compete more strongly with video conferencing and calling platforms by offering a faster, more reliable, and more flexible experience.

For Nigerian users, the ability to make calls via web browser without a desktop app could reduce data costs and improve convenience for small business owners and remote workers who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication.
