Dangote Commits $11.7 Billion (33% of Fortune) to Charity in Landmark Philanthropy Plan

By

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has pledged to donate one-third of his estimated $35.1 billion wealth to charity as part of his family succession plan. The commitment, worth about $11.7 billion at current valuations, was disclosed by his daughter Halima Dangote in an interview with Bloomberg.

Halima, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, said the billionaire has already secured the consent of his family and structured his will in line with Islamic principles that allow a portion of an estate to be dedicated to charitable causes. The move is designed to ensure the family’s philanthropic work continues across future generations.

Family Succession Plan Anchored on Philanthropy

Halima explained that Dangote views charitable giving as a key part of his legacy. She said her father had already transferred a significant portion of his wealth to the foundation and obtained the signed endorsement of his daughters and mother approving the 33% allocation. “Giving back is a core value of both the family and its businesses,” she stated.

The planned donation falls below the 50% benchmark associated with the Giving Pledge, but it would still rank among the largest publicly announced philanthropic commitments by any African billionaire. Dangote’s net worth, pegged at $35.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, makes the proposed $11.7 billion pledge one of the biggest on the continent.

Foundation’s Focus on Nigeria: Health, Education, Nutrition

Founded in 1994, the Aliko Dangote Foundation has grown into one of Africa’s largest private charitable organisations. Halima revealed that the foundation received an endowment of $1.25 billion about a decade ago and has since attracted an additional $700 million in funding.

Roughly 70% of the foundation’s annual spending is invested in projects across Nigeria, while 20% supports programmes in other African countries. The remaining funds go to initiatives in different parts of the world. Its interventions cover healthcare, education, nutrition and humanitarian assistance. The foundation partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and several northern Nigerian state governments on vaccination campaigns that helped eliminate wild poliovirus in Africa.

How the Funds Will Be Deployed

The Aliko Dangote Foundation already spends more than ₦50 billion each year on programmes aimed at improving lives in Nigeria and across Africa. Earlier this year, TIME magazine included Dangote in its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, citing the foundation’s work in health, education and humanitarian support.

Halima said the decision to allocate 33% of his inheritance reflects Dangote’s belief that philanthropy should continue across generations. The foundation’s activities are focused mainly on health and education, with most of its funding spent on programmes in Nigeria.

What This Means for Nigeria

The pledge ensures that billions of dollars in philanthropic capital will remain directed at Nigeria’s health and education sectors for decades. With the foundation already pumping over ₦50 billion annually into local programmes, the $11.7 billion commitment will sustain and likely expand those efforts, supporting everything from vaccination campaigns to school feeding schemes. For Nigerian businesses and consumers, the spending keeps significant capital within the local economy, indirectly aiding the naira by funding projects that reduce import dependence in health and nutrition.
