Nigeria discovers oil, gas in Plateau State after five year study

Nigeria's search for new oil and gas reserves has received a major boost. A five year geological study has found evidence of oil and natural gas deposits in parts of Plateau State.
The research was funded by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in partnership with the University of Jos. It identified conditions favourable for hydrocarbon generation in the Middle Belt region. Natural gas is the most promising resource found so far.
The findings were presented at the University of Jos on Thursday, June 26, 2026. Professor Nuhu Kadai Samaila, who led the study, confirmed the presence of geological indicators linked to oil and gas accumulation.
“I can tell you that there is oil in Plateau. What we are able to establish right now is gas,” Samaila said. He added that the team found thick sediments and temperature gradients strong enough to mature source rocks within the basin.
Researchers focused on the Shendam Sheet 212 area of the Benue Trough. Laboratory analysis showed appreciable organic carbon content in rock samples. Sediment thickness exceeded 500 metres in several locations. These are key signs that support hydrocarbon generation despite weathering and erosion.
The study indicates that natural gas is more likely to be commercially viable than crude oil in the area. Preliminary analysis showed the organic materials were predominantly gas prone.
The discovery opens fresh possibilities for exploration in Nigeria's Middle Belt and could boost Plateau State's economy and investment opportunities.
