WhatsApp now lets you add an email address for account recovery and security

WhatsApp has introduced email linking, giving users another way to recover their accounts if they lose access to their phone number or cannot receive the six-digit verification code by SMS or phone call. The feature adds an extra layer of security, especially for users who may temporarily lose access to their mobile numbers.
Linking an email address makes account recovery easier when standard phone-based verification is unavailable. If a user needs to re-register their phone number but cannot receive SMS or calls, WhatsApp can send recovery instructions to the verified email. The email also provides another channel for WhatsApp to contact users about potential security issues on their accounts.
Email linking does not replace phone number
Adding an email address does not replace the phone number requirement for creating a WhatsApp account. It only provides an additional recovery option.
To link an email address, open WhatsApp and tap Settings. Select Account, then tap Email Address. Enter the email you want to link. WhatsApp will send a verification code to that address. Enter the code to complete the process.
Users can also add an email during initial registration when WhatsApp prompts them to set up their account.
What to do if verification fails
Some users may encounter problems while adding or verifying an email address. WhatsApp recommends checking the internet connection first. If the problem continues, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if the network is the cause.
If changing networks does not resolve the issue, DNS settings could be responsible. Certain third-party DNS configurations may interfere with WhatsApp services. Users with persistent problems can switch back to their mobile carrier's default DNS settings, or use reputable public DNS services such as Google's 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1.

For Nigerians who rely on WhatsApp for business and personal communication, email linking offers a practical backup route. If a SIM card is lost, damaged, or swapped, the linked email can help restore access without waiting for a new phone number. Keeping recovery information updated reduces the risk of being locked out when phone-based verification is unavailable.
