WhatsApp now lets you chat without sharing your phone number – how to activate the new username feature

WhatsApp is rolling out a major privacy update that lets users connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers. The Meta-owned messaging app is introducing unique usernames for its over three billion users worldwide.
The feature gives users more control over their personal information. It is especially useful when chatting with strangers, joining community groups, or taking part in large group conversations.
Starting Monday, users can reserve a unique username directly inside the app. The option is voluntary. It provides an alternative way to connect without exchanging phone numbers.
Once the feature is fully available, users can add and message each other simply by sharing usernames. Users can change or remove their usernames at any time.
WhatsApp says usernames can have up to 35 characters. Certain restrictions apply to prevent impersonation. Names of public figures, celebrities, and high-profile officials are protected to stop anyone from claiming identities that could mislead others.
WhatsApp stressed that there will be no public directory of usernames. People cannot search randomly for users. Phone numbers are still required when creating a WhatsApp account, even if they are no longer visible during chats.
Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's Head of Product, said the company developed the feature after hearing from users who were uncomfortable sharing their phone numbers in certain situations. Many people, especially those in community groups or connecting with new contacts, wanted a safer way to communicate.
