Cheaper smartphones on the horizon as FG backs local phone factory plan

By

The Federal Government is moving to bring smartphone manufacturing to Nigeria. The goal is to lower device prices, create jobs, and expand digital access for millions of citizens.

Idris Olorunnimbe, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), said the NCC is seeking presidential incentives for investors ready to build phone factories in the country. He spoke after the Digital Africa Summit Roundtable in Shanghai.

Manufacturing smartphones locally will make them more affordable for Nigerians, Olorunnimbe said. It will also generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Students, young people, and small business owners who cannot afford many imported devices stand to benefit most.

Local production will strengthen Nigeria's industrial sector by deepening local value chains and reducing dependence on imported smartphones. Olorunnimbe noted that relying on imports leaves consumers exposed to high prices and supply chain disruptions.

To attract investment, the NCC is offering government support to companies that begin factory construction before November. The NCC will also help connect serious manufacturers with the necessary resources.

The NCC has also proposed smartphone instalment payment schemes. This is meant to make devices even more affordable and accelerate digital inclusion across the country.
