The Central Bank of Nigeria has officially launched the CBN Naira Ambassadors Club. The nationwide campaign aims to instill respect for the naira and promote careful handling of banknotes among young Nigerians.
The initiative was rolled out in the Federal Capital Territory. It involved secondary school students who will serve as primary ambassadors. They will champion the proper use of the naira in their schools and local communities.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso spoke at the launch event. He said the naira is more than a tool for transactions. It is a symbol of Nigeria's identity, sovereignty and economic vitality.
Cardoso stated: 'The Naira is much more than paper and polymer. It is the legal tender of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It facilitates trade, supports economic activity, enables savings and investment, and serves as a visible expression of our national identity and sovereignty.'
He added that each banknote carries elements of Nigeria's history and culture. These include portraits of eminent Nigerians, national symbols and security features designed to protect the monetary system.
Cardoso stressed that preserving the naira is a shared responsibility. Improper treatment of banknotes increases operational costs and hinders the smooth circulation of money. He said the CBN spends heavily to produce clean, durable and secure banknotes but loses a significant portion to costly replacements due to abuse.
