The National Bureau of Statistics has reported that Nigerians paid an average of N1,596.25 per litre for petrol in May 2026. That is a 55.31% jump from N1,027.76 in May 2025. Month on month, the price rose 4.13% from N1,532.93 in April 2026.

Edo state recorded the highest average retail price at N1,722.91 per litre. Bauchi followed at N1,715.47 and Benue at N1,698.57. Other states with high prices include Gombe at N1,686.37, Delta at N1,667.68, and Yobe at N1,665.91. Abia, Jigawa, Taraba, and Oyo also made the top ten list.

The South-South zone had the highest average price among all geopolitical zones at N1,623.84 per litre. The North-West recorded the lowest zonal average at N1,564.11 per litre.

On the other end, Adamawa had the cheapest petrol at N1,469.83 per litre. Katsina and Sokoto followed with N1,470.63 and N1,489.33 respectively.

The NBS attributed the price increases to higher supply expenses, market conditions, and distribution challenges. The rising fuel costs continue to push up transportation, logistics, and household spending across the country.
