DisCos start crediting customers for poor power supply under Band A

By

Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria have started giving refunds to customers after failing to meet the minimum 20 hours of daily power required under the Band A tariff.

In Lagos, Eko Electricity Distribution Company issued credits to some customers. One customer received N30,628.90 as compensation for poor supply in February 2026.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission says the compensation is meant to enforce compliance. Customers should not pay premium rates for substandard service.

Under Band A, consumers pay over N200 per kilowatt-hour. They expect at least 20 hours of electricity daily. When DisCos fall short, rules require them to compensate customers.

The refunds show that regulators are now enforcing performance obligations. The sector has long been criticised for unreliable service despite high charges.

Customers received emails with account and meter details. The payments are tied to regulatory compliance, not goodwill gestures.

The compensation is calculated based on the shortfall in supply hours and the amount of energy not delivered.
