NMDPRA: Nigeria consumed 46.3 million litres of petrol daily in May

By

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported that Nigerians consumed an average of 46.3 million litres of petrol per day in May 2026.

According to the regulator's May 2026 Facts Sheet, domestic refineries supplied most of the petrol consumed. Local refining and supply sources delivered 44.7 million litres daily.

Total PMS availability reached 47.4 million litres per day. This was 1.1 million litres more than daily consumption, giving a marginal surplus.

Nigeria's refining system operated at 101.25% utilisation in May. This means domestic refining capacity was exceeded for the month.

Despite the improvement, total supply still fell short of the regulatory demand estimate of 50 million litres per day. It covered about 95% of expected demand.

The NMDPRA also reported that 24.5 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were produced daily by domestic refineries. Of this, 18.2 million litres were sold locally while 6.5 million litres were exported.

For aviation turbine kerosene, 21.9 million litres were generated daily. Some 17.5 million litres were exported while 2.8 million litres were sold within Nigeria.

The country ended May with 16 days of petrol stock sufficiency, indicating adequate fuel supplies.
