WhatsApp green dot feature now live for Android beta users

By

WhatsApp has started rolling out a green dot indicator for Android beta users. The feature shows when a contact is online.

The green dot appears on a contact's profile picture inside the chat information screen. It replaces the simple 'online' text that used to sit under the profile photo.

The feature is part of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.24.5. It aims to make online status more visible at a glance. The design mirrors what other messaging apps already use.

WhatsApp says privacy is still a priority. Contacts who have hidden their online status or last seen information will not show the green dot to others.

For now, the green dot only appears when you open a contact's chat info page. It does not show in the main chat list or inside conversation windows yet. Industry watchers expect it to expand to more areas of the app as WhatsApp develops its planned Contacts Hub.
