The Niger State Internal Revenue Service (NGSIRS) has sealed two branches of Unity Bank in Minna over an alleged N1.7 billion tax debt. The enforcement happened on Friday, June 5, 2026.
Musa Hayatullah, the Director of Tax Audit and Investigation, led the task force. The affected branches are located along Mobil Roundabout and Paiko Road in the Niger State capital.
Hayatullah said the bank failed to remit tax obligations for the 2022 to 2024 assessment years. He stated that the bank ignored repeated notices and reminders from the revenue authority.
The NGSIRS had conducted tax audits on all commercial banks in Niger State. Other banks paid their assessed taxes. Unity Bank allegedly did not remit its liabilities after final assessments.
The agency followed due process. It engaged the bank several times before seeking court backing. The Niger State High Court in Minna granted an order on June 4, 2026, to distrain the bank and recover the debt from its facilities.
Hayatullah said the action became necessary after the bank persistently refused to settle its tax debts. The agency had exhausted administrative appeals before going to court. The enforcement is part of broader measures to boost internally generated revenue and enforce tax compliance in the state.
