FreeTV launches with 100 channels as DStv Stream cuts free access to just 4

Nigeria has launched FreeTV, a new platform offering over 100 television and radio channels with no subscription fees. The move comes at a time when many households are looking for cheaper entertainment options.
But while FreeTV is expanding access, DStv Stream is going the other way. MultiChoice has quietly reduced its free streaming package from 13 channels to just four. That change took effect as of June 2026.
The channels still available on DStv Stream without a subscription are SuperSport Schools, SuperSport Play, Channel O, and TBN Africa. Nine other channels that were once free have been removed.
DStv Stream was previously known as DStv Now. The free streaming option was first introduced in March 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time, it gave viewers access to 13 channels at no cost.
The reduction in free channels limits choices for viewers who depend on free streaming content. This shift is happening as competition in Africa's streaming market continues to grow. Pay-TV providers are under pressure to adapt as more affordable alternatives become available.
The launch of FreeTV and the cutback by DStv Stream highlight a broader trend. Consumers are demanding cheaper access to entertainment, and platforms are being forced to respond.
