Cooking gas prices surge over 300% since 2023, hitting Nigerian households hard

By

Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have jumped more than 300% since early 2023. This has put heavy pressure on households across the country.

Experts say foreign exchange volatility and high logistics costs are the main reasons for the increase. Many families now find cooking gas too expensive. Some have cut back on usage. Others have switched back to kerosene or firewood.

In early 2023, the average price of cooking gas was between N650 and N700 per kilogram. Refilling a standard 12.5kg cylinder cost around N8,000 to N9,000. At that time, many Nigerians chose LPG as a cleaner and cheaper option. Government campaigns also encouraged people to adopt it.

Now, the situation is different. The government has been urged to boost LPG imports and invest in local production. This could help stabilise the market and bring prices down.
