WhatsApp to Drop Support for Older iOS Versions by November 2026

By

WhatsApp has announced that from November 30, 2026, it will only support devices running iOS 15.5 or newer. The move affects millions of Apple users in Nigeria and worldwide, including those using older iPhones, iPads, iMacs, and MacBooks.

The Meta-owned messaging platform said the change also applies to WhatsApp Business users. Devices on iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, or 15.4 will lose access unless users update before the deadline.

WhatsApp has started sending in-app alerts to affected users, urging them to upgrade. The company explained that supporting outdated software slows down new features and security updates.

Most Users Won’t Need New Devices

Affected users may not need to buy new hardware. iOS 15.5 is a minor update, meaning most iPhones already running iOS 15 can simply upgrade. Users can check for updates by going to Settings, tapping General, and selecting Software Update.

WhatsApp said the decision is part of efforts to improve performance, security, and reliability. The platform noted that newer features rely on technologies only available in recent Apple operating systems.

Business Users Urged to Act Early

Small businesses that depend on WhatsApp Business for sales and customer communication are advised to update early. Failure to do so could disrupt daily operations.

WhatsApp also hinted that some Android smartphones will lose support later this year as the company shifts focus to newer operating systems. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance security and introduce advanced features.
