NBS Report: Tomato, Beans, Garri, Onion Prices Drop Year-on-Year in April 2026

The National Bureau of Statistics has released its latest Selected Food Price Watch report for April 2026. The report shows mixed trends, with several staple food items recording year-on-year price declines.

Tomatoes, brown beans, garri, and onions all saw lower average prices compared to April 2025. However, month-on-month prices for some items edged up.

Key Price Movements

One kilogram of tomatoes sold for an average of N1,177.92 in April 2026. This is an 8.23% drop from N1,283.57 in April 2025. Month-on-month, the price rose by 6.60% from N1,105.03 in March 2026.

Brown beans fell sharply. The average price of 1kg stood at N1,338.93, down 44.89% from N2,429.39 a year earlier. Month-on-month, it increased slightly by 0.99% from N1,325.85 in March.

Garri white sold loose averaged N808.96 per kg, a 39.86% drop year-on-year from N1,345.10. Month-on-month, it rose by 0.93% from N801.66.

Onion bulb prices declined 22.56% year-on-year to N1,164.39, down from N1,503.56. Month-on-month, it fell by 0.98% from N1,153.16.

Fresh ginger bucked the trend. The average price of 1kg rose 12.30% year-on-year and 0.73% month-on-month to N5,581.82.

State-Level Prices

Bayelsa recorded the highest average price for tomatoes at N1,600.73 per kg. Plateau had the lowest at N730.48.

For brown beans, Oyo topped the list at N1,938.91 per kg. Taraba recorded the lowest at N750.00.

Abia had the highest price for garri white at N1,075.47 per kg. Plateau was cheapest at N517.94.

Onion bulb prices were highest in Abia at N2,191.63 per kg. Nasarawa recorded the lowest at N832.16.

Regional Breakdown

Tomatoes were most expensive in the south-south region at N1,561.10 per kg and the south-east at N1,379.57. The north-west region had the cheapest at N822.72.

Beans cost the most in the south-west at N1,787.09 per kg, followed by the south-south at N1,764.99. The north-east recorded the lowest at N871.79.

Garri white was priciest in the south-east at N944.58 per kg and the south-south at N944.01. The north-central region had the cheapest at N673.88.

Fresh ginger prices were highest in the south-west at N6,812.92 per kg and the south-east at N6,432.15. The north-east had the lowest at N3,881.12.

The report indicates an annual deflation in most staple foods but localized inflation in the market.
