Google rolls out Fake Call Detection for Android to fight AI voice scams

By

Google has launched a new security feature for Android devices called Fake Call Detection. It identifies and warns users about suspected impersonation calls in real time. The tool uses encrypted verification technology to confirm whether a caller is genuine. It alerts users when a spoofed number or fraudulent call is detected.

How it works

The feature is rolling out globally on devices running Android 12 and later versions, starting with Pixel smartphones. It is enabled by default and requires no user settings. Fake Call Detection uses a secure verification process similar to a digital handshake. When two people using the Phone by Google app communicate, the caller’s device silently sends an encrypted signal. If someone spoofs a trusted contact’s number, the signal is missing. The recipient’s phone checks with the actual contact’s device. If the real device confirms no call is being made, a warning appears on screen.

The verification relies on Rich Communication Services (RCS), an end-to-end encrypted messaging standard. Google says the technology is built on open standards, allowing other smartphone makers to adopt similar safeguards.

Why it matters for Nigeria

Impersonation scams are one of the fastest-growing forms of financial fraud worldwide. In Nigeria, criminals increasingly use voice-cloning software and spoofed numbers to pose as relatives, business associates, or trusted institutions. The INTERPOL March 2026 Global Financial Fraud Threat Assessment says impersonation schemes remain a major contributor to financial losses. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers lost $2.95 billion to such scams in 2024. Industry estimates show AI-enabled fraud schemes caused over $400 billion in global losses in 2025.

Google says the feature adds an extra layer of protection directly on users’ devices. “Security shouldn’t be limited to just one type of phone or app. We want to raise the bar across the industry to help protect as many people as possible,” the company said.

The rollout is part of Google’s broader effort to strengthen digital security across its ecosystem. As cybercriminals adopt more sophisticated AI tools, Google’s initiative reflects a shift toward proactive, device-based security measures.
