Android 17: Samsung Phones Launched in 2022 or Earlier Will Miss Out, Full List Revealed
By Aboki Forex —
Nigerian Samsung users hoping for Android 17 and One UI 9 may need to check their phone's launch year. The new software is expected to roll out after Google releases Android 17 stable in June 2026. But many Galaxy devices released in 2022 or earlier will not get the update.
Samsung's software support policy is the reason. Each phone comes with a fixed number of major Android upgrades. Once a device hits that limit, it stops receiving new Android versions. For many models launched between 2021 and 2023, Android 16 and One UI 8 are the final major upgrades. Some may still get One UI 8.5 and security patches, but Android 17 and One UI 9 are off the table.
Flagship phones affected
The Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra have exhausted their four promised Android upgrades after receiving Android 16. The Galaxy S21 FE is also done. Older flagships like the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Note 20, and Note 20 Ultra have already been retired from Samsung's major update roadmap. They will not see Android 17.
Foldables hit the wall
Samsung's foldable lineup is also affected. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 reached their final Android upgrade with Android 16. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 have already completed their software lifecycle. No Android 17 for them.
Popular A-series phones in Nigeria left out
Many Galaxy A-series phones popular across Africa will not get Android 17. The list includes: Galaxy A33 5G, A53 5G, A73 5G, A24, A23 5G, A23 LTE, A13, A14 and A14 5G, A52, A52 5G, A52s, A32, and A72. Some of these devices will still receive security updates for a limited time before support ends completely.
Galaxy M and F series also affected
Several Galaxy M and F series phones are reaching the end of their software support. Models missing Android 17 include: Galaxy M33 5G, M34, M53, M54, M14 and M14 5G, M13 and M13 5G, F34, F54, F14, F13, and F23. These phones may get occasional security patches but no more Android upgrades.
Tablets not spared
Samsung tablet users are also affected. The Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra will stop at Android 16. Older devices like the Galaxy Tab S7 lineup have already ended support. Budget tablets including the Galaxy Tab A8, Tab A9, and A7 Lite are excluded from Android 17 eligibility.
What you will miss
Affected devices will still get One UI 8.5 with improvements like better Quick Share, AI photo editing, document scanning enhancements, Bluetooth Auracast updates, and a refreshed Quick Settings interface. But they will miss Android 17 exclusive features such as enhanced multitasking, new privacy controls, App Lock, and Android's improved desktop experience.
What Nigerian users should do
If your phone is on this list, there is no urgent need to replace it. Most affected devices will continue receiving security patches for another year or more. But if you plan to keep your phone for several years, consider newer models. Samsung's latest mid-range devices like the Galaxy A16 5G, A26, A36, A56, and M16 now come with up to six years of Android updates. That makes them a more future-proof investment.
For buyers in Nigeria and other African markets where Galaxy A and M series phones dominate sales, checking a device's launch year may be as important as checking its specifications.
