Canal+ shakes up DStv pricing, adds World Cup to lower packages
By Aboki Forex —
Canal+ is overhauling DStv’s pricing and content structure to attract budget-conscious subscribers across Africa. The French media company, which completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group in 2025, has started rolling out changes that signal a new direction for the pay-TV giant.
Lower-tier subscribers are gaining additional content. In South Africa, DStv Access customers now get extra music and wrestling channels. Sports fans received a bigger boost. All 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be available on Access, Family, Compact, Compact Plus and Premium packages. Previously, such premium events were reserved for higher-paying subscribers.
The move is part of a strategy to retain customers as streaming platforms, fibre internet and free online video compete for entertainment budgets. Canal+ is shifting DStv towards a streaming model while using live sports to keep loyal subscribers.
Premium customers see fewer benefits
While lower-tier subscribers get more value, customers on premium packages have seen few additional benefits despite paying higher fees. Premium packages now cost about KSh11,700 monthly in Kenya. Compact Plus subscriptions exceed KSh7,000. The growing contrast suggests Canal+ is prioritising affordability and retention at the lower end of the market.
Canal+ executives have also indicated plans to simplify DStv’s complex product structure. Over the years, DStv developed multiple bouquet options, decoder choices and add-on services that varied across markets. The company now appears to be moving toward a leaner model built around app-based viewing, subsidised devices and broader content access at more affordable price points.
The shift is evident in the handling of Showmax content. After the standalone service ended in April 2026, selected original productions and licensed content were integrated into the DStv Stream platform for Compact, Compact Plus and Premium subscribers. Several traditional channels, including BET Africa, MTV Base, CBS Reality and CBS Justice, have left the platform.
Live sports remain key advantage
Live sports remain DStv’s biggest competitive advantage across Africa. Football rights, especially major international tournaments, continue to be strong reasons subscribers stay on the platform. The challenge for Canal+ is whether that advantage alone can justify premium prices as consumers compare DStv with cheaper streaming alternatives.
MultiChoice earlier announced it will not increase subscription prices for DStv and GOtv in April 2026, breaking its tradition of annual price hikes. CEO David Mignot confirmed the decision is part of a broader strategy to stabilise the business and win back customers across Africa.
