Cooking gas prices jump 13% month-on-month, North-West pays most

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released its latest Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch report for April 2026. The data shows a sharp increase in the average retail price of cooking gas across Nigeria.
The average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of LPG rose by 13.73% month-on-month, from N7,655.73 in March 2026 to N8,706.93 in April 2026. Year-on-year, the price increased by 10.42% compared to N7,885.60 recorded in April 2025.
For a 12.5kg cylinder, the average price climbed 13.89% month-on-month, from N19,652.83 in March to N22,382.20 in April. Year-on-year, that is a 10.43% rise from N20,268.06 in April 2025.
State-by-state breakdown
Lagos recorded the highest average price for a 5kg cylinder at N9,745.10. It was followed by Nasarawa at N9,451.70 and Bayelsa at N9,422.74.
Anambra had the lowest average price for 5kg at N7,204.76. Ondo came next at N7,239.49, followed by Ogun at N7,825.75.
For 12.5kg cylinders, Katsina topped the list at N25,596.71. Kogi followed at N24,558.25, and Gombe at N24,438.97. The cheapest 12.5kg refills were in Ogun at N19,564.36, Bauchi at N20,178.87, and Anambra at N20,511.90.
Zonal analysis
The North-West zone recorded the highest average price for 5kg LPG at N9,025.07. The North-East followed at N8,847.16. The South-East had the lowest average at N8,224.37.
For 12.5kg LPG, the North-West again led at N23,276.95. The North-Central came next at N22,865.29. The South-East recorded the lowest average at N21,060.92.
The NBS report also noted that daily LPG consumption averaged 4,818 metric tonnes in April, exceeding the average daily supply of 4,545 metric tonnes. This supply gap has put upward pressure on prices.
