Federal Government Declares Eid-ul-Adha Holidays, Banks to Shut Branches May 27-28

The federal government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the Eid-ul-Adha celebration. All commercial banks and financial institutions in Nigeria will close their physical branches nationwide during this period.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government. He said the declaration reflects the government’s respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims observing the sacred festival.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important events in the Islamic calendar. Muslims across the world mark the occasion with prayers and acts of charity.

In his statement, Tunji-Ojo urged Muslims to use the celebration to pray for peace, security, and prosperity in Nigeria. He called on all citizens to embrace the principles of sacrifice, obedience to God, and kindness to others.

“This declaration affirms the Federal Government’s profound respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims who join the global Islamic community in observing this sacred occasion,” the minister said.

He also encouraged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lessons of sacrifice and love, especially towards the less privileged. He stressed the need for prayer and unity to maintain stability across the country.

During the holiday, banks will rely on their digital platforms to serve customers. A sample notice from a bank read: “We encourage you to make use of our digital channels to carry out your transactions during this period. Wishing you a safe and restful holiday.”

Customers are advised to plan their transactions ahead and use online banking, mobile apps, and USSD codes for any urgent financial needs.
