Microsoft Shuts Down Outlook Lite, Over 10 Million Users Affected
By Aboki Forex —
Microsoft has officially shut down Outlook Lite, its lightweight email app for Android users with low-end devices and slow internet. The move affects over 10 million users globally. Users can no longer access their email accounts through the app.
Outlook Lite was retired on May 25, 2026. Microsoft advised users to migrate to the standard Outlook Mobile app to continue accessing emails, calendars, and attachments. The company said no email accounts or stored data will be deleted. All data remains secure in Microsoft's cloud. Users only need to install the main Outlook app and log in with existing credentials.
Why Microsoft Killed Outlook Lite
Microsoft launched Outlook Lite in August 2022. It was designed for emerging markets and regions with poor network coverage. The app used less storage and worked on 2G and 3G networks. But as Outlook Mobile added all of Outlook Lite's features, maintaining a separate app became unnecessary.
The shutdown was not sudden. Microsoft blocked new downloads from the Google Play Store in October 2025. Existing users had several months before the final shutdown.
What This Means for Nigerian Users
Nigerian users who relied on Outlook Lite must switch to Outlook Mobile. The app remains available on the Google Play Store. Microsoft says all emails, contacts, and calendars are still safe. Users should update their apps now to avoid missing important messages.
This move follows a trend of tech companies simplifying their app portfolios. Samsung recently announced plans to phase out its Samsung Messages app by July 2026, advising users to switch to Google Messages.
