Showmax Shutdown Leaves Nigerian Subscribers Fuming Over Missing Content on DStv Stream
By Aboki Forex —
Former Showmax subscribers are crying foul after discovering that many of their favourite shows did not make the move to DStv Stream. MultiChoice had promised a seamless transition when it shut down the standalone Showmax service. But users say the reality has been far from smooth.
Promised access, missing titles
MultiChoice announced that selected Showmax Originals and other titles would be moved to a dedicated section inside the DStv Stream app. The company assured subscribers that award-winning African stories and original productions would remain available. But many users now report that entire seasons and ongoing series they were actively watching have disappeared.
According to a report by MyBroadband, complaints have flooded social media, especially on X. Viewers are questioning why only some content made the cut while popular titles were left behind.
Subscribers share their pain
X user Kholofelo Thuleleni said they were in the middle of watching the drama series Empini before the switch disrupted access. “Been watching Empini from Showmax, then relocated to DStv streaming, but it’s been two days now and all the season two episodes are gone,” the user wrote.
Another frustrated subscriber, Zibusiso Ngubane, asked: “What’s the point when there are shows that aren’t on DStv Stream that we watched on Showmax. Where are they?”
Lydia Craemer said she lost access to multiple episodes of a telenovela she had been following. “I’ve lost viewing privileges to at least 10 episodes of season 3 of a telenovella I was watching because my trial starts with episode 84. Wish you’d migrated all of season 3’s episodes,” she said.
MultiChoice stays silent
Despite growing complaints, MultiChoice has not provided further clarification. MyBroadband contacted the company for feedback on the missing content and the terms of any promotional offers. At the time of publication, no response had been received.
For many subscribers, the silence has only deepened frustration. Users are demanding clarity on whether their missing shows will return or if they are gone for good.
Legit.ng earlier reported that MultiChoice has confirmed DStv subscription prices will remain unchanged in 2026, a break from its usual annual price hikes. The move is part of efforts to win back lost subscribers amid competition from streaming services. Willington Ngwepe, MultiChoice CEO South Africa, confirmed the decision.
