WhatsApp to Drop Support for Older iPhone and Android Devices

WhatsApp users with older smartphones may soon lose access to the popular messaging platform. The company is rolling out a major compatibility update that affects both iPhone and Android devices.
iPhone Users Affected
WhatsApp has confirmed it will phase out support for iPhones running iOS versions below 15.1. This means devices that cannot upgrade to iOS 15.1 or later will no longer be able to send messages, make calls, or access new features. Affected iPhone models include the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Users can check their iOS version by going to Settings > General > About > iOS Version. If the version is below 15.1 and no further updates are available, the device will soon lose WhatsApp support permanently.
Android Users Also Face Shutdown
Android users are not left out. WhatsApp will discontinue support for devices running Android versions older than 6.0. This includes Android 5.0 and 5.1. The company has set September 8, 2026 as the final deadline for affected Android devices. After that date, users must upgrade their operating system or switch to a newer phone to continue using WhatsApp.
Why the Change?
WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, regularly updates its minimum system requirements to improve security, app performance, and compatibility with new features. Tools like improved encryption, advanced privacy settings, and enhanced media sharing need newer software environments.
