No Super Eagles at 2026 World Cup but 15 diaspora Nigerians feature for other nations

By

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway with 48 teams competing. Nigeria is not among them. The Super Eagles failed to qualify through the African qualifiers.

This is a big miss for a country that has reached the knockout rounds before and remains one of Africa's most talent-rich football nations.

But Nigerian influence is still strong at the tournament. At least 15 players of Nigerian descent are playing for other countries. They represent England, the United States, France, Germany, Canada and others.

These players cover attacking, midfield and defensive roles. Their presence shows how migration and football globalisation have reshaped international squads.

The pattern points to a structural problem. Nigeria struggles to keep its elite talent at home even as Nigerian heritage shapes outcomes on the world stage.

One of the diaspora players is Promise David of Canada.
