Xoom to Nigeria — PayPal's Transfer Service Reviewed (2026)
Last updated: 8/13/2026 | By Aboki Forex
People keep discovering Xoom while trying to work out why PayPal cannot send money to Nigeria the way they expect. The short version: Xoom can. It is PayPal's dedicated international remittance arm, it supports Nigeria, and it pays out in naira to a bank account or as cash pickup.
Whether you should use it is a different question, and it comes down to the naira rate rather than the brand.
Xoom vs PayPal — Not the Same Thing
| PayPal | Xoom | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Online payments wallet | Remittance service (PayPal-owned) |
| Send naira to a Nigerian bank? | No | Yes |
| Cash pickup in Nigeria? | No | Yes, at partner locations |
| Login | PayPal account | Same credentials work |
| Fees | Payment fee structure | Remittance fee + FX margin |
The overlap in login is what causes the confusion. Signing into Xoom with a PayPal account does not mean PayPal itself gained naira payout — it means you skipped a registration form.
How to Send Money to Nigeria with Xoom
- Download Xoom or use xoom.com, and sign in with PayPal or register.
- Select Nigeria as the destination and enter the amount to send.
- Choose the payout method — bank deposit or cash pickup. Bank deposit is what most people want.
- Enter recipient details — full name exactly as it appears on their bank account, bank name, and NUBAN account number. A name mismatch is the single most common cause of a rejected deposit.
- Choose how to fund it — bank account is cheapest, debit card is faster, credit card is the most expensive.
- Review the naira amount shown on the confirmation screen. That figure, not the fee, is what you are comparing.
- Send, and keep the confirmation number until the recipient confirms receipt.
What It Actually Costs
Two charges stack, and only one is advertised:
- The transfer fee, which varies with amount, payout method and funding source. Bank-funded transfers are consistently cheaper than card-funded ones.
- The exchange rate margin, built into the naira rate Xoom quotes. This is usually the larger of the two on anything above a few hundred dollars.
To measure the margin, take the naira figure on the confirmation screen, divide by the dollars you are sending, and compare the result to the live dollar to naira black market rate. That single division tells you more than any fee table. Our full cost breakdown guide works through why the margin dominates as amounts rise.
Watch the credit card trap. Funding a Xoom transfer with a credit card can be treated by your issuer as a cash advance — interest accrues immediately with no grace period, plus a cash-advance fee. This can quietly cost more than the transfer itself. Fund from a bank account or debit card.
Bank Deposit vs Cash Pickup
Bank deposit suits almost everyone: the recipient needs only a Nigerian bank account, the money lands directly, and there is a record. Get the account name character-exact — Nigerian banks match on name as well as number.
Cash pickup earns its place when the recipient has no bank account, is in an area where a bank branch is impractical, or needs physical cash immediately. They will need valid ID and the transfer reference. It is the same operational pattern as receiving Western Union in Nigeria, and the same safety rules apply — collect during the day, do not discuss the amount, and count before leaving the counter.
One thing Xoom does not do: deliver dollars. If your recipient needs foreign currency rather than naira — for school fees abroad, or to hold value — a domiciliary account receiving a SWIFT wire, or USDT, is the route. Xoom converts, always.
Where Xoom Is Strong — and Where It Isn't
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Backed by PayPal — established, regulated, well-supported | Naira rate often behind Nigeria-focused apps |
| Cash pickup as well as bank deposit | Card funding fees add up quickly |
| Fast when funded by card | Naira payout only — no dollars to a dom account |
| Familiar login if you already use PayPal | Compliance holds on larger first transfers |
Alternatives Worth Checking First
The Nigeria-focused operators compete specifically on the naira rate, which is where Xoom is most often beaten:
- LemFi — zero fees, consistently strong naira rates
- Sendwave — zero fees, very fast bank deposits
- TapTap Send — widest sending-country coverage
- Remitly — Express vs Economy speed tiers
- Wise — transparent, mid-market pricing
- USDT P2P — best rate on larger amounts
Our side-by-side app comparison covers all of these on rate, fee and speed. If you are sending from the United States specifically, the cheapest-from-USA guide and the instant transfer guide narrow it further.
And the services people try first that simply do not reach Nigeria: Zelle, Cash App and Venmo.
