How to Send Money from the Netherlands to Nigeria (2026)
Last updated: 8/13/2026 | By Aboki Forex
The Netherlands has one of Europe's better payment systems — iDEAL, instant SEPA, Tikkie — and none of it reaches Nigeria. Nigeria is not in SEPA, Nigerian banks do not have IBANs, and Tikkie is a domestic request tool. Every transfer to Lagos or Abuja has to leave the euro system through a money transfer operator, a SWIFT wire, or a stablecoin.
The good news: the Netherlands is well served by the apps that do the job, and iDEAL is one of the cheapest funding methods anywhere in Europe.
What Works — Ranked
| Method | Euro to naira rate | Speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| LemFi | Strong, zero fee | Minutes | Regular family transfers |
| Sendwave | Strong, zero fee | Minutes | Fast bank deposits |
| TapTap Send | Strong, zero fee | Minutes to hours | Simple, no-frills sending |
| Wise | Mid-market + visible fee | Hours to a day | Transparency, multi-currency |
| Remitly | Competitive | Express or Economy | Choosing speed vs price |
| WorldRemit | Competitive | Same day | Cash pickup, airtime |
| USDT P2P | Near parallel — best on large sums | Under an hour | €3,000+ transfers |
Ranking positions move. The one number that settles it on any given day is how much naira the recipient receives — compare that against the live euro to naira black market rate and pick the winner.
Funding: iDEAL vs SEPA vs Card
- iDEAL — instant, cheap, debits your ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, SNS, ASN or Bunq account directly. The default choice where offered.
- SEPA bank transfer — cheapest but adds a day; the app waits for the money to clear before paying out.
- Debit card — fast, usually a small surcharge.
- Credit card — avoid. Surcharge plus a likely cash-advance charge from your own issuer.
What Doesn't Work
- SEPA transfer direct to a Nigerian bank — Nigeria is not in the SEPA zone and has no IBAN system. There is no account number to send to.
- Tikkie — a payment request between Dutch accounts. Domestic only.
- Revolut / N26 direct to a Nigerian bank — neither supports naira payout to Nigerian accounts. Useful for holding currency, not for delivering it.
- PayPal — Nigerian accounts cannot reliably receive. See our PayPal in Nigeria guide.
Sending Larger Amounts
Above roughly €3,000, consumer app limits and the percentage margin both start to bite. Two better options:
- SWIFT wire to a Nigerian domiciliary account. Your Dutch bank sends euros or dollars to a dom account in Nigeria. The recipient holds foreign currency and converts when they choose — useful for school fees, property or savings. Watch for correspondent bank deductions and note that converting inside a Nigerian bank prices near the official rate, not the parallel rate.
- USDT. Buy stablecoin in euros, send it, have it sold for naira on a P2P platform at close to the parallel rate. Settles within the hour. Check the live USDT to naira rate first.
Buying property or land back home is its own set of traps — our diaspora property guide covers moving the money and verifying title from abroad.
Getting the Details Right
- Recipient's full name exactly as their bank has it. Nigerian banks match name against account number; "Adeyemi J." against "Adeyemi Joseph Kolawole" bounces.
- The 10-digit NUBAN, confirmed directly with the recipient — not copied from an old message.
- The correct bank. Same account number at the wrong bank simply fails.
- Verify your account before you need it. ID checks delay first transfers, not later ones.
- Send a small test the first time you use any new app.

Rates move with market conditions rather than on a schedule. For a monthly transfer, checking the benchmark before you send takes ten seconds and is the single highest-return habit in this whole guide.
