How to Send Money from Malaysia to Nigeria (2026)

Last updated: 9/2/2026 | By Aboki Forex

Malaysia is a two-way corridor, and most people arrive at this page from one of two directions. Either you are a student or worker in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya or Johor sending ringgit home, or you are a parent in Nigeria trying to get tuition money to a child studying there. The routes are different in each direction, and this guide covers both.

One thing is constant: there is no deep direct market between the ringgit and the naira. Every provider prices MYR to NGN through the dollar, which means the parallel dollar rate decides what lands even though no dollars appear on your receipt.

Malaysia to Nigeria — What Works

MethodMYR to naira rateSpeedBest for
Merchantrade / licensed MSBs Competitive Same day Regular transfers, branch or app
Instarem Competitive, fee visible Same to next day Online sending from a Malaysian account
Wise Mid-market + visible fee Hours to a day Transparency
Western Union / MoneyGram Weaker, fee visible Minutes for pickup Recipient without a bank account
USDT P2P Near parallel — best on large sums Under an hour RM 10,000+ transfers

Nigeria-focused apps like LemFi and Sendwave are built around the US, UK, Canada and EU sending markets and generally do not serve Malaysia. Check inside the app rather than assuming — but plan around the licensed Malaysian providers as your baseline.

Funding a Transfer in Malaysia

  • FPX / online banking — the standard route from Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank or RHB. Cheap and same-day.
  • DuitNow — instant where the provider supports it as a funding method.
  • Debit card — fast, small surcharge.
  • Cash at a branch — still common with the exchange-house style providers, and useful if you are paid in cash.

The student-community agent trap. In every Nigerian student hub in Malaysia there is someone in a WhatsApp group offering ringgit-to-naira rates that no licensed provider can match, payment first. Some are genuine peer swaps; many are not, and the losses are almost never recovered. Bank Negara Malaysia licenses money services businesses and publishes the register — check it, and read our forex scam guide for the patterns these operations follow.

Nigeria to Malaysia — Sending School Fees

This is the heavier direction of the corridor. Malaysian universities are a popular destination for Nigerian students, and tuition has to be paid in ringgit or dollars from a country with foreign exchange controls. Four routes:

  1. CBN Form A through your Nigerian bank — the official channel, priced at the official rate, requires an admission letter, invoice and supporting documents, and takes time. Our school fees guide covers the full document list and processing reality.
  2. Domiciliary account wire — fund a dom account with dollars, then SWIFT them to the university. Faster than Form A, and the university receives a clean international payment.
  3. Dollar card — works for smaller items such as application fees, deposits and living expenses. See best virtual dollar card for what survives international merchants.
  4. USDT — used widely for living expenses rather than tuition, since universities do not accept crypto. Buy naira-side, send, and have the student sell for ringgit locally.

Also relevant if you are travelling for the semester: our PTA and BTA guide covers the travel allowance at the official rate, and proof of funds for a visa application covers the bank statement side of the student visa process.

Checking You Are Getting a Fair Rate

Because the corridor routes through the dollar, the check is a two-step:

  1. Convert the ringgit amount to dollars using the world currency converter.
  2. Multiply by the live dollar to naira parallel rate.

That is roughly the ceiling of what any provider could deliver. Compare it against the naira figure on the quote screen — a gap of a couple of per cent is normal and fair; a gap of ten per cent means you are paying for convenience you may not need.

Getting the Details Right

  1. Recipient's full name exactly as their Nigerian bank holds it — name and account number are matched.
  2. The 10-digit NUBAN, confirmed directly with the recipient.
  3. The right bank — the same number at another bank fails.
  4. Time zones. Malaysia is seven hours ahead of Nigeria; send in the Malaysian evening to hit the Nigerian working afternoon.
  5. A small test transfer the first time you use any provider.

Does Aboki Forex Trade (Exchange) Currencies?
No, we do not trade any currency pair. Aboki Forex is purely an information platform that provides real-time black market and official CBN exchange rates. To exchange currency, contact a licensed Bureau de Change (BDC), your bank, or a trusted local forex dealer.
Is AbokiFx the same as Aboki Forex?
No, Aboki Forex (abokiforex.app) and AbokiFx are two separate and unaffiliated platforms. We are not connected to AbokiFx in any way. Aboki Forex provides live black market and CBN exchange rates for all major currencies versus the Nigerian Naira.
How can I Exchange Currency in Nigeria?
To exchange foreign currency in Nigeria, you have several options: (1) Visit a licensed Bureau de Change (BDC) — these are regulated by the CBN and found in major cities. (2) Use your commercial bank — they offer official CBN rates for account holders. (3) Use a trusted local forex market dealer — these operate in parallel/black market and typically offer higher rates than banks. Always verify the current rate on Aboki Forex before exchanging to ensure you get a fair deal.
Are the Black Market Rates accurate in all Markets?
Aboki Forex provides average black market rates collected from multiple dealers across major Nigerian cities including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt. Because the parallel market is unregulated, actual rates vary by location, dealer, and transaction size. The rates on Aboki Forex are a reliable benchmark, but always confirm the exact rate with your dealer before completing any transaction.
What is the difference between CBN, I&E and Black Market Rates?
The CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) rate is the official government exchange rate used by commercial banks and regulated financial institutions. The I&E (Investors and Exporters) window was a market-based rate that has now been merged with the official CBN rate following Nigeria's forex unification policy. The Black Market rate (also called the parallel market or street rate) is typically higher than the official rate and reflects actual supply and demand dynamics for foreign currency in Nigeria outside the regulated banking system.
How often are the exchange rates updated on Aboki Forex?
Black market exchange rates on Aboki Forex are updated every hour throughout the trading day. The rates reflect real-time data collected from parallel market dealers across Nigeria. CBN official rates are updated daily, typically after the Central Bank of Nigeria publishes its official rates each business day.
What is the best way to send money from the USA to Nigeria?
The best way to send money from the USA to Nigeria depends on the amount: Sendwave charges zero fees for everyday transfers, Wise gives the best exchange rate on larger amounts, and USDT P2P delivers naira closest to the black market rate. Note that Zelle, Cash App, and Venmo cannot send money to Nigeria. See our full guide on how to send money from the USA to Nigeria, and check the live dollar to naira black market rate before you send.
Why is the black market dollar to naira rate higher than the official CBN rate?
The black market dollar to naira rate is higher than the official CBN rate because of the gap between foreign currency supply and demand in Nigeria. The Central Bank of Nigeria controls access to dollars at the official rate, limiting who can buy forex through official channels. Businesses and individuals who cannot access dollars through banks must turn to the parallel market, where higher demand relative to supply drives up the exchange rate.
